Which iPhone should you actually buy: 17e, 17, Air, or 18 Pro

Apple's current lineup spans four genuinely different phones rather than one design at different price points, which makes picking the right one less obvious than it used to be.

iPhone 17e: the value pick

iPhone 17e carries the A19 chip forward at Apple's lowest current price. It is the right call if you want a current, fully supported iPhone and do not need the Pro camera system or the thinnest possible design.

iPhone 17: the all-rounder

iPhone 17 is the standard mainstream iPhone: no compromises for most everyday use, and priced below the Pro models.

iPhone Air: thinnest, most opinionated

iPhone Air is built around an ultra-thin titanium unibody with the A19 Pro chip and a single 48MP camera. It is eSIM-only with no physical SIM tray, which matters if you rely on a physical SIM or swap SIMs between devices.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: the ceiling

Both run the 2-nanometre A20 Pro chip with a variable-aperture main camera and a titanium frame. Pro Max adds a larger 6.9-inch ProMotion display and a longer 5x telephoto reach. Choose these if you want the newest chip and camera hardware and do not mind paying the most for it.

Most buyers are best served by iPhone 17 or iPhone 17e. Reach for iPhone Air only if the thin design matters more to you than a physical SIM slot, and reach for the 18 Pro models only if you specifically want the newest camera hardware.
