iPhone 17 vs Galaxy S26: which should you buy?

Two 6.3-inch flagships side by side: screen, cameras, battery, charging and software support, taken from the spec sheets.

iPhone 17 vs Galaxy S26: which should you buy?

The iPhone 17 and the Galaxy S26 are the two phones most people end up comparing this year. Both have a 6.3-inch screen, both are rated IP68, and both are small enough to use with one hand. The differences are in the details, so here they are, taken from the published spec sheets.

Screen

Both use a 120Hz OLED panel at 6.3 inches. The iPhone 17 is the sharper of the two at 1206 x 2622 pixels (about 460 ppi) against 1080 x 2340 (about 411 ppi) on the S26, and it reaches 3000 nits at peak against 2600 nits. Day to day, both are bright and smooth. You will notice the difference mostly in direct sun.

Cameras

The iPhone 17 has two rear cameras, a 48MP main and a 48MP ultrawide, plus an 18MP front camera. The Galaxy S26 has three: a 50MP main, a 12MP ultrawide and a 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom, and a 12MP front camera. If you like zooming in on a subject without losing detail, the S26's telephoto is the practical advantage. If you shoot a lot of selfies and video calls, the iPhone's 18MP front camera has the edge on resolution.

Performance and storage

The iPhone 17 uses the Apple A19 chip with 8GB of RAM and starts at 256GB. The Galaxy S26 uses a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 or an Exynos 2600 depending on the market, with 12GB of RAM, and starts at 128GB. Neither has a memory card slot, so choose a storage size you will still be happy with in three years.

Battery and charging

The S26 has the bigger battery, 4300 mAh against 3692 mAh. The iPhone charges faster with a suitable charger, reaching 50% in about 20 minutes, and supports up to 25W wireless charging with MagSafe or Qi2. The S26 reaches 55% in about 30 minutes on a 25W wired charger and charges wirelessly at 15W. Battery size alone does not decide battery life, because the two phones manage power differently, so treat both as an all-day phone.

Software support

Samsung promises up to seven major Android updates for the S26. Apple does not publish a fixed number, but iPhones have typically received updates for around six years. Either way, you can expect to keep either phone for a long time.

Which should you choose?

If you already use a Mac, iPad or AirPods, the iPhone 17 keeps everything working together and has the better front camera and screen. If you want a telephoto camera, more RAM and a larger battery in a phone of the same size, the Galaxy S26 is the better match. Both are available here, new and unlocked, and both come with a free accessory pack when you pay in full.
